Good health cannot be taken for granted.
You have to know what to do to maintain it. What are the pillars of a solid foundation for good health and longevity?
We list six strategies for optimal health --
Relaxation, Exercise, Assessment,
Environmental Control, Nutrition and
integrative Treatment of disease.
It would be impossible to do justice to every one of these on this web site; I will touch on each one, but the focus will be nutrition.
R - We'll start with the fun one - Relaxation. One of the primary threats to our health is one we can do something about - stress. Americans take less time off from work than most peoples of the world. We spend less time with our families. Relaxation may take many forms. Vacation is important, whether a weekend at the lake or a cruise to the islands. Meditation is a particularly effective daily stress buster, whether disciplines like yoga, deep breathing or just "calm time".
E - Yes, the big E, Exercise. Not a lot, just 20-30 minutes a day, but you must be consistent and push yourself to benefit. First do some weight resistance training to build muscle. Then for aerobic workout, brisk walking will do fine. You and I know people who endure brutal workouts in order to achieve their physical goals. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not necessary ... if you take care of the other "pillars".
A - Assessment. This means having regular medical checkups to monitor your health and to assess the benefits of your efforts to improve your health. Pay particular attention to the blood chemistry profile including triglycerides as well as homocysteine levels. Let your doctor know about vitamins, minerals and supplements you are taking; they may conflict with medication you are taking and in some cases may skew your blood test results.

E - Environmental control. There are many health threats in our environment - toxins in our food, air, water, homes and workplace. More critically, these toxins accumulate in our bodies. It is vital that we take steps to avoid toxins in our environment and food. Additionally, include nutrients in our diet which help our bodies get rid of accumlated toxins. Start with drinking lots of water, the easiest way to rid your body of toxins.
N - Nutrition. In the context of this web site, nutrition includes diet (the food we eat), diets (weight loss plans) and supplementation, when we fail to get certain nutrients from our diet, as well as nutrients that prevent and even alleviate illnesses. To the expression "You are what you eat", I would add "You are what you don't eat". You cannot know which foods to seek out and which to avoid if you don't have knowledge; that's what Best Health Secrets is all about. Finally, portion control is vital to longevity and good health. Rather than count calories, develop good eating habits like recognizing proper portions and stop eating when you are 80% full.
iT - The integrative Treatment of disease. Sometimes, in spite of our efforts, we succumb to disease, often minor, occasionally severe but sometimes life-threatening. It is imperative that you seek the diagnosis and treatment of a licensed physician, IDEALLY one who is also trained in complementary and alternative medicine. In these pages, we'll examine why drugs or surgery should be a last resort, not first.
